Less than 1% of Sailors ever have the privilege to command.
To sit in the chair.
To hold responsibility for both the mission and the people.
To carry the sacred trust of command.
In this powerful conversation, we explore leadership from both sides of that privilege:
•Stepping in to relieve a command at sea
•Experiencing relief from command
•Rebuilding credibility
•Guarding integrity
•Leading with humility
•Developing the next generation
This is not a highlight-reel episode.
This is a real leadership conversation.
As someone who had the privilege to command NR NAVNETWARCOM’s Global Network Operations Security Center, I know firsthand the weight of the chair. Being relieved of command could happen to anyone. I have no stones to cast — only lessons to learn and share for the junior officers who follow us.
⸻
🔎 What You Will Learn:
⚓ Why command is a sacred trust — not an entitlement
⚓ The subtle dangers of ego and ethical drift
⚓ Guardrails every future CO must build
⚓ How humility protects leadership longevity
⚓ What rebuilding trust actually requires
⚓ Lessons from adversity that shape stronger leaders
Dr. Simmons brings 28 years of Naval service, four at-sea commands, service on the Joint Staff and CNO staff, and deep scholarship in strategic leadership to this conversation.
This one is for:
•Naval Junior Officers aspiring to command
•Senior leaders navigating accountability
•Executives balancing performance and character
•Anyone who believes leadership is about growth — not perfection
