🎯 WHAT WILL WE LEARN?

On December 7, 1941, Miller was not an officer or ship's captain. He was serving aboard USS West Virginia in a segregated Navy that severely restricted opportunities available to Black Sailors.

But when Pearl Harbor was attacked, the moment exceeded his assignment—and his character determined his response.

We will explore timeless leadership lessons from his example:

⚓ Leadership begins before permission arrives. You don't need the title to lead.

❤️ Take care of your people. Before Miller manned the gun, he helped his mortally wounded commanding officer. Mission FIRST, People ALWAYS.

🔥 MAN THE GUN. When the mission requires responsible action, don't hide behind “That's not my job.” Bring excellence wherever it is needed.

🫡 Courage requires action before certainty. Leadership often means moving toward the problem when others are moving away.

💡 Never confuse rank with leadership. Titles provide authority; character, competence, initiative, and service build influence.

🚪 Great leaders recognize potential others overlook. Who are we failing to see because of their rank, title, background, education, or current assignment?

🌱 Leadership creates possibilities for people you may never meet. Our greatest legacy may be the doors we open for those who come after us.

And ultimately:

Take care of your people.
Move toward the problem.
MAN THE GUN.
LEAD. 🇺🇸⚓
